Frequently Asked Questions:

WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback uses EEG (electroencephalogram) technology, to monitor brain activity and reward proper brain function.

Neurofeedback is an exercise for the brain that can be compared to a workout at the gym. It improves the brain’s ability to self-regulate and encourages greater control over functions including concentration and mood. Sometimes our nervous systems interfere with self-regulation with the result being headaches, panic attacks, extreme anger, etc. Strengthening the brain’s self-regulation is a drug free method of overcoming these interferences. At the Neurofeedback Centers for Success, our clinicians are much like the personal trainers you find at the gym. They work with clients to develop a custom brain training program that focuses on the particular weaknesses, needs and desires of the individual. Just like the workout program at the gym will be different depending on whether a person is trying to lose weight, build muscle mass or train for a triathlon, when a person comes to the Neurofeedback Centers for Success with dyslexia or attention deficit the training will be different from that of a person wanting to increase memory or ease a sleep disorder.

HOW DOES NEUROFEEDBACK WORK?

Neurofeedback uses sophisticated, non-invasive computer technology to monitor brain activity and reward healthy brain function. The rewards are fed to the brain in the form of visual images and auditory sounds, hence the name, NeuroFEEDback.

A typical training session at the Neurofeedback Centers for Success works like this: An individual’s brain waves are monitored while he or she plays a specially designed video game. Electrodes, attached to the scalp using a conductive paste, allow the computer to monitor and measure brain activity. A specially trained clinician reviews the brainwave activity and sets reward targets that train the brain’s electrical signals to perform in a manner that may, for example, increase concentration or help regulate mood depending on what the individual needs. When the brain finds and hits the target, visual and auditory rewards are fed back to the brain. Eventually, the brainwave activity is shaped toward more desirable and regulated performance.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM NEUROFEEDBACK?

Individuals of all ages have benefited from training at the Neurofeedback Centers for Success. Neurofeedback strengthens the brain much like a physical workout strengthens the body. Executives, athletes and artists can benefit from this training; older individuals can benefit—anyone who is interested in performing at a higher level. Also, people who suffer from sleep disorders, learning problems, eating disorders, anger, anxiety, substance abuse, depression, sensory deficits— the list is quite extensive because the brain is in control of all physiological functions. The bottom line is that our bodies and our minds are made healthier with proper nutrition and exercise.

WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN AND NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback is just as effective with children as it is with adults. Whether a child suffers from hyperactivity, dyslexia, inattention, confusion, behavior problems, attention deficit disorder, or any number of common learning disorders, the Neurofeedback Centers for Success can help. Neurofeedback workouts train the child to self-regulate; which in time, will allow the condition to correct. The good news is that the correction is usually permanent.

HOW SAFE IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback is non-invasive, and as such, is perfectly safe. Many parents are leery about medicating their children, and that is what makes neurofeedback so special. It is a drug free, non-invasive treatment that really works. The Neurofeedback Centers for Success has an ever growing list of success stories. Children who were receiving D’s and F’s on their report cards are now on honor roll. Attitudes and behaviors have improved, hyperactivity has calmed. People with speech impediments have found correction through neurofeedback. Individuals with high levels of anxiety have found relief from exhausting compulsive and obsessive behaviors. The list of conditions that can be benefited by neurofeedback is quite remarkable.

WHAT IS THE EXPECTED RESPONSE TO NEUROFEEDBACK?

Most people find neurofeedback very interesting, rewarding and enjoyable. Typically, clients of the Neurofeedback Centers for Success notice an increase in brain performance within one or two visits.

ARE THE EFFECTS LASTING?

Yes, if you do enough training. As with any kind of learning, when the brain is exposed to repeat training the result is a permanent learned skill. It will not be forgotten unless there is an ongoing disease process or an unrelenting stress that undermines the training.

HOW LONG HAS NEUROFEEDBACK BEEN AVAILABLE?

Neurofeedback was initially developed in the 1960’s and 1970’s. It became a widely used clinical practice in the 1980’s with the introduction of personal computers.

WHERE IS NEUROFEEDBACK PERFORMED?

At the Neurofeedback Center’s for Success, training sessions are performed in an office setting by skilled clinicians. Neurofeedback is a very powerful tool and must be individualized to suit the needs of each person. It is highly recommended that individuals start with the support of experienced and trained clinicians to optimize the results.

HOW LONG IS A NEUROFEEDBACK SESSION?

Typically a session runs from 30 minutes to one hour a minimum of once a week.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?

At the Neurofeedback Centers for Success, individuals tend to see a significant, measurable impact after about 20 sessions. We then reassess the individual to determine if 20 more sessions will fully automate and optimize the training. Remember, this brain exercise is not “one size fits all” – it is determined by the specific needs of each client. That is why a thorough assessment is made prior to beginning a program.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD A PERSON TRAIN?

We encourage individuals to commit to a minimum of one session per week or more if time allows. It is even possible to do two sessions in one day if a person is traveling some distance to do the training. Just like a physical exercise program, though, consistency is the key to success. The Neurofeedback Centers for Success has two locations in the Inland Empire to make it convenient for clients to attend weekly sessions, as this is the best way to optimize the training.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Cost for training is dependent upon the number of sessions that are needed and the specific programs that are recommended for each client.  Financing plans are available, and at the Neurofeedback Centers for Success we will work with your financial situation.  Flexible payment plans can be arranged to meet your needs.
